Common questions

How do I move my data to a new iPhone?

Your logs aren't in iCloud or in device backups, so restoring a new phone won't bring them along. Move them with an encrypted backup:

  • On the old phone, open Settings in Hemogoblin (the gear on Today), tap Back up, choose a passphrase and save the file somewhere you can reach from the new phone, such as Files or iCloud Drive.
  • On the new phone, install Hemogoblin, then tap the backup file in Files or AirDrop it over. Or use Import in Hemogoblin's Settings.
  • Enter the passphrase. Done.
Is my data backed up automatically?

No. That's on purpose: your logs stay out of iCloud and out of device backups. Make an encrypted backup in Settings now and then. Settings shows when you last did.

I forgot my backup passphrase.

There's no way to recover it, for you or for us. The backup can only be opened with the passphrase it was made with. If you still have the app with your data on your phone, make a new backup with a new passphrase.

How do I connect or disconnect Apple Health?

In Hemogoblin's Settings, under Apple Health, turn on Periods and symptoms or Body signals. To change what Hemogoblin can read or write later, go to iPhone Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Health, then Hemogoblin. Remove from Apple Health deletes everything Hemogoblin wrote there.

What do body signals need?

Readings in Apple Health: sleeping wrist temperature from an Apple Watch that measures it, basal body temperature from a thermometer app, resting heart rate, or ovulation test results. With enough nights logged, Hemogoblin estimates when your temperature shifted each cycle. Settings shows what's arriving and from where.

The estimates seem off.

They sharpen with every period you log, and the first few cycles lean on what you entered at setup. Missing a log can make one cycle look extra long; editing your periods in Settings fixes the history. If estimates aren't useful right now, for any reason, turn on Pause estimates and keep logging.

Reminders aren't showing up.

Check that notifications are allowed for Hemogoblin in iPhone Settings, and that a Focus isn't silencing them. In Hemogoblin's Settings, turn on the reminders you want and pick a delivery time. Discreet keeps cycle words out of the notification text.

How does the lock work?

Turn on the Face ID (or Touch ID) lock in Settings. If Face ID doesn't recognize you, your device passcode works too. The app also hides its contents in the app switcher.

How do I get the Apple Watch app?

Install Hemogoblin on your iPhone first. Then open the Watch app on your iPhone, find Hemogoblin under available apps and tap Install. The Watch app logs today and the last week, and sends everything to your iPhone.

How do I delete everything?

In Hemogoblin's Settings, tap Delete all data. There's no undo, so back up first if you might want it later. Deleting the app also removes its data from your phone. Anything written to Apple Health stays there until you remove it.

Does Hemogoblin work as birth control?

No. The fertile window and estimated ovulation are estimates, not a contraceptive. See the Terms.
